शूरैः शिक्षाबलोपेतैस् तरुणैर् अत्यमर्षणैः ॥
दृष्ट्वैकं समरे शूरं सौभद्रम् अपराजितम् ॥
छाद्यमानं शरव्रातैर् हृष्टो दुर्योधनो ऽभवत् ॥
वैवस्वतस्य भवनं गतम् एनम् अमन्यत ॥
सुवर्णपुङ्खैर् इषुभिर् नानालिङ्गैस् त्रिभिस् त्रिभिः ॥
अदृश्यम् आर्जुनिं चक्रुर् निमेषात् ते नृपात्मजाः ॥
śūraiḥ śikṣābalopetais taruṇair atyamarṣaṇaiḥ ||
dṛṣṭvaikaṃ samare śūraṃ saubhadram aparājitam ||
chādyamānaṃ śaravrātair hṛṣṭo duryodhano 'bhavat ||
vaivasvatasya bhavanaṃ gatam enam amanyata ||
suvarṇapuṅkhair iṣubhir nānāliṅgais tribhis tribhiḥ ||
adṛśyam ārjuniṃ cakrur nimeṣāt te nṛpātmajāḥ ||
By warriors endowed with training and strength, youthful and extremely fierce — Abhimanyu being covered with arrows — seeing this one invincible warrior, the son of Subhadra, overwhelmed in battle by clouds of arrows, Duryodhana rejoiced, deeming him gone to the dwelling of Vaivasvata [Yama]. With golden-feathered arrows of various kinds, three each, those princes made the son of Arjuna vanish from sight in an instant.

Duryodhana rejoices the moment he sees the youth covered in arrows, hastily deeming him already dead: malicious joy is quick to mistake the wished-for for the accomplished. But to be "made invisible" beneath a cloud of arrows is not yet to be struck down — what is hidden is appearance, not substance. It is significant that the enemy's joy flares up before the outcome is known — and, as the tradition has shown more than once, prematurely. The verse teaches that malicious joy tends to take appearance for reality, burying the enemy before his actual death; that what is hidden beneath a cloud of arrows does not mean struck down; and that premature rejoicing over an opponent's death, like any triumph declared before the deed is done, betrays credulity rather than insight — and often precedes the disgrace of the one who rejoiced too soon.
