अलुब्धो मतिमान् ह्रीमान् क्षमावान् रूपवान् बली ॥
वपुष्मान् मानकृद् वीरः प्रियः सत्यपरायणः ॥
यस्य श्लाघन्ति विबुधाः कर्माण्य् ऊर्जितकर्मणः ॥
निवातकवचाञ् जघ्ने कालकेयांश् च वीर्यवान् ॥
महेन्द्रशत्रवो येन हिरण्यपुरवासिनः ॥
अक्ष्णोर् निमेषमात्रेण पौलोमाः सगणा हताः ॥
परेभ्यो ऽप्य् अभयार्थिभ्यो यो ददात्य् अभयं विभुः ॥
तस्यास्माभिर् न शकितस् त्रातुम् अद्यात्मजो भयात् ॥
alubdho matimān hrīmān kṣamāvān rūpavān balī ||
vapuṣmān mānakṛd vīraḥ priyaḥ satyaparāyaṇaḥ ||
yasya ślāghanti vibudhāḥ karmāṇy ūrjitakarmaṇaḥ ||
nivātakavacāñ jaghne kālakeyāṃś ca vīryavān ||
mahendraśatravo yena hiraṇyapuravāsinaḥ ||
akṣṇor nimeṣamātreṇa paulomāḥ sagaṇā hatāḥ ||
parebhyo 'py abhayārthibhyo yo dadāty abhayaṃ vibhuḥ ||
tasyāsmābhir na śakitas trātum adyātmajo bhayāt ||
"Free from greed, wise, modest, forbearing, handsome and strong, stately, respectful of others, a hero, beloved, faithful to truth [— such is Arjuna]. Whose deeds even the gods extol — the doer of mighty feats: valorous, he struck down the nivatakavachas and the kalakeyas; by whom the enemies of great Indra, the denizens of the Golden City, the paulomas with their hosts, were destroyed in the twinkling of an eye. He who, as lord, grants safety even to foes pleading for protection — his own son we have now failed to safeguard from calamity."

The lament rises from the son to the father: a long garland of virtues and extraordinary deeds — the nivatakavachas, the kalakeyas, the paulomas of Hiranyapura, struck down "in the twinkling of an eye" — extols Arjuna, "whose deeds the very gods extol". And at the summit of this greatness stands the sharpest self-reproach: "parebhyaḥ api abhayārthibhyaḥ yaḥ dadāti abhayam… tasya… na śakitaḥ trātum… ātmajaḥ". He who grants protection even to enemies did not receive protection for his own son. It is telling, this contrast between the one who grants safety and those who failed to guard his child. The verse teaches that the gravest sin is to fail the magnanimous, unable to return even the small measure of what he freely gave to strangers.
