विविंशतिश् चित्रसेनो विकर्णश् च तवात्मजः ॥
अयोधयन् भीमसेनं महत्या सेनया वृताः ॥

viddhvā pañcāśatā bāṇaiḥ punar vivyādha saptabhiḥ ||
tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṃ tayor atyadbhutaṃ nṛpa ||
yathā pūrvaṃ mahad yuddhaṃ śambarāmararājayoḥ ||
viviṃśatiś citraseno vikarṇaś ca tavātmajaḥ ||
ayodhayan bhīmasenaṃ mahatyā senayā vṛtāḥ ||
Then King Yudhishthira, having pierced the king of Madra in battle with fifty arrows, pierced him again with seven. Then arose their most wondrous battle, O king, like the great battle of old between Shambara and the king of the immortals [Indra]. Vivimshati, Chitrasena, and Vikarna, your son, surrounded by a great army, assailed Bhimasena.

The chapter closes with new pairs: Yudhishthira against Shalya -- "like Indra and Shambara"; Bhima against Duryodhana's brothers. Once again earthly battles are raised to the myth of the strife between gods and demons. It is significant that each clash is given a heavenly prototype. The verse teaches that the Mahabharata sees in war not a chronicle of slaughter but the unfolding of the eternal drama of dharma and adharma: every duel is a reflection of the cosmic battle; and so in the death and valor of men a greater meaning shows through -- the triumph of truth, toward which the very course of things leads.
