महारथसमाख्याता दुर्योधनहितैषिणः ॥
अमृष्यमाणास् तं शब्दं क्रुद्धाः परमधन्विनः ॥
नानादेश्या महीपालाः स्वसैन्यपरिरक्षिणः ॥
अमर्षिता महाशङ्खान् दध्मुर् वीरा महारथाः ॥
कृते प्रतिकरिष्यन्तः केशवस्यार्जुनस्य च ॥

Renowned as great warriors, wishing good for Duryodhana, unable to bear that sound, enraged, the foremost archers -- vexed, those hero-maharathas blew their great conches, answering in kind the deed of Keshava and Arjuna.

The answering blast of conches is born not of strength but of "amṛṣyamāṇāḥ… amarṣitāḥ", impatience and vexation: wounded pride rushes to "pratikariṣyantaḥ", repay. It is telling that what moves them is not a righteous cause but injury at the enemy's voice. The verse teaches that an act born only of stung pride is but an echo of another, not one's own firmness; whoever answers out of vexation is led by the enemy, not by his own strength.
