सौमदत्तिं त्रिभिर् विद्ध्वा शल्यं च दशभिः शरैः ॥
शितैर् अग्निशिखाकारैर् द्रौणिं विव्याध चाष्टभिः ॥
गौतमं पञ्चविंशत्या शैन्धवं च शतेन ह ॥
पुनर् द्रौणिं च सप्तत्या शराणां सो ऽभ्यताडयत् ॥
saumadattiṃ tribhir viddhvā śalyaṃ ca daśabhiḥ śaraiḥ ||
śitair agniśikhākārair drauṇiṃ vivyādha cāṣṭabhiḥ ||
gautamaṃ pañcaviṃśatyā śaindhavaṃ ca śatena ha ||
punar drauṇiṃ ca saptatyā śarāṇāṃ so 'bhyatāḍayat ||
Having pierced the son of Somadatta [Bhurishravas] with three arrows, and Shalya with ten sharp arrows resembling tongues of flame, he pierced the son of Drona as well with eight; Gautama [Kripa] with twenty-five, and the Sindhu king [Jayadratha] with a full hundred, and again he struck the son of Drona with seventy arrows.

One answers nine, each according to the force of his onslaught, yet Jayadratha receives "shatena" -- a full hundred: Arjuna's eye is already fixed on the one for whose sake this whole defense has been gathered. It is telling that amid so many enemies the archer's gaze never loses its true target. The verse teaches that firmness of purpose does not scatter in confusion: whoever remembers his goal is not thrown off course even when surrounded by many, and his blow falls heaviest exactly where the knot of the matter is tied.
