एवं गते नरश्रेष्ठ पाण्डवे सत्यवादिनि ॥
अस्माकं गमनं व्यक्तं वनं प्रति भवेत् पुनः ॥
सो ऽयं मम जयो व्यक्तं व्यर्थ एव भविष्यति ॥
यदि द्रोणो रणे क्रुद्धो निगृह्णीयाद् युधिष्ठिरम् ॥
स त्वम् अद्य महाबाहो प्रियार्थं मम माधव ॥
जयार्थं च यशोर्थं च रक्ष राजानम् आहवे ॥
evaṃ gate naraśreṣṭha pāṇḍave satyavādini ||
asmākaṃ gamanaṃ vyaktaṃ vanaṃ prati bhavet punaḥ ||
so 'yaṃ mama jayo vyaktaṃ vyartha eva bhaviṣyati ||
yadi droṇo raṇe kruddho nigṛhṇīyād yudhiṣṭhiram ||
sa tvam adya mahābāho priyārthaṃ mama mādhava ||
jayārthaṃ ca yaśorthaṃ ca rakṣa rājānam āhave ||
'With such a turn of events, O best of men, with the truthful son of Pandu — our exile to the forest would plainly come again to pass. That victory of mine will clearly prove futile, if Drona, enraged in battle, seizes Yudhishthira. Therefore you now, O mighty-armed one, for love of me, O Madhava, and for the sake of victory and glory, guard the king in battle.'

Arjuna reminds him: the truthful Yudhishthira, once captured, would by his own word go again into exile — 'asmākaṃ gamanaṃ… vanaṃ prati'. Thus the king's fidelity to truth makes his capture especially ruinous. It is significant that Yudhishthira's very nobility is his vulnerability. The verse teaches that righteousness is not unarmed against treachery: the truthful is more easily snared, for he is bound by his own word; and so guarding such a one is a double duty, since his honesty itself exposes him to danger.
