Satyaki, pierced by the king of the Kurus, shone greatly; blood flowed copiously, as sap flows from a sandal tree. And your son, pierced by floods of arrows from the Satvata, golden-crested, shone like a raised sacrificial post.

Both warriors, streaming with blood, shine with a beauty born of terror: Satyaki bleeds, "svarasaṃ candano yathā," as sandalwood yields its own sap, while Duryodhana is likened to "yūpa iva ucchritaḥ," a raised sacrificial post. It is telling that the instigator of the war is compared to a sacrificial stake — he himself will become the offering. The verse teaches that strife turns warriors into victims on the altar it has itself erected; and he who kindled it for the sake of a kingdom becomes like a sacrificial post — a doomed offering to the reckoning yet to come.
