माधवस् तु रणे राजन् कुरुराजस्य धन्विनः ॥
धनुश् चिच्छेद सहसा क्षुरप्रेण हसन्न् इव ॥
अथैनं छिन्नधन्वानं शरैर् बहुभिर् आचिनोत् ॥
निर्भिन्नश् च शरैस् तेन द्विषता क्षिप्रकारिणा ॥
नामृष्यत रणे राजा शत्रोर् विजयलक्षणम् ॥
अथान्यद् धनुर् आदाय हेमपृष्ठं दुरासदम् ॥
विव्याध सात्यकिं तूर्णं सायकानां शतेन ह ॥
mādhavas tu raṇe rājan kururājasya dhanvinaḥ ||
dhanuś ciccheda sahasā kṣurapreṇa hasann iva ||
athainaṃ chinnadhanvānaṃ śarair bahubhir ācinot ||
nirbhinnaś ca śarais tena dviṣatā kṣiprakāriṇā ||
nāmṛṣyata raṇe rājā śatror vijayalakṣaṇam ||
athānyad dhanur ādāya hemapṛṣṭhaṃ durāsadam ||
vivyādha sātyakiṃ tūrṇaṃ sāyakānāṃ śatena ha ||
Madhava, in the battle, O king, suddenly cut the bow of the king of the Kurus, the archer, with a razor-tipped arrow, as if laughing. And pierced by the arrows of that swift-acting enemy, the king could not bear, in battle, the mark of his enemy's victory. Then, taking up another bow, golden-backed and formidable, he swiftly struck Satyaki with a hundred arrows.

Duryodhana "na amṛṣyata... śatror vijayalakṣaṇam," cannot bear the token of his enemy's victory: wounded pride cuts deeper than wounds. It is telling that it is not the pain but the shame of appearing defeated that inflames him. The verse teaches that for the proud, the very sign of defeat weighs heavier than defeat itself: one who is stung not by injury but by the mark of his own weakness is driven by wounded vanity, not sober judgment — and this very pride draws him further into ruinous strife.
