Karna enveloped him with many swarms of arrows; being enveloped by Karna again and again, the delight of Pandu severed Karna's bow at the very grip, the great warrior, and struck him with many smooth-jointed arrows. Then, taking another bow and stringing it, the son of the suta, himself of terrible deeds, the great warrior, struck Bhima in battle.

The duel sways: now Karna envelops with arrows, now Bhima cuts his bow. It is telling that between equals advantage is fleeting. The verse teaches that in the clash of the worthy there is no easy triumph: fortune passes from hand to hand, and every blow meets an equal answer — for the greatness of the battle lies in the equality of those who meet, not in the superiority of one.
