अभ्यवर्तत संग्रामे भारद्वाजं युयुत्सया ॥

द्रोणस्य सोमकैः सार्धं संग्रामो लोमहर्षणः ॥
ते तु सर्वप्रयत्नेन भारद्वाजं जिघांसवः ॥
सैन्धवे निहते राजन्न् अयुध्यन्त महारथाः ॥

tato vāditraghoṣeṇa svān yodhān abhiharṣayan ||
abhyavartata saṃgrāme bhāradvājaṃ yuyutsayā ||
tataḥ pravavṛte rājann astaṃ gacchati bhāskare ||
droṇasya somakaiḥ sārdhaṃ saṃgrāmo lomaharṣaṇaḥ ||
te tu sarvaprayatnena bhāradvājaṃ jighāṃsavaḥ ||
saindhave nihate rājann ayudhyanta mahārathāḥ ||
Hearing that mighty roar, Yudhishthira, the son of Dharma, understood that the great-souled Phalguna had slain Saindhava. Then, gladdening his warriors with the sound of instruments, he advanced into battle against Bharadvaja, eager for the fight. Then, O king, as the sun was sinking toward its setting, there broke out between Drona and the Somakas a battle that made the hair stand on end. And they, the great warriors, striving with all their might to slay Bharadvaja, fought on even after Saindhava had been slain, O king.

The news of victory travels on that roar, and Yudhishthira, heartened, moves against Drona: a vow fulfilled gives strength to the whole army. It is telling that the battle does not end with Jayadratha's fall — Drona still lies ahead: one goal is reached, but the war goes on. The verse teaches that the fulfillment of a great duty is not an end but a new threshold; and the joy of victory turns at once into readiness for the next trial, for the path of dharma knows no resting on a single summit.
