Then king Duryodhana, thus incited by Drona, fallen under the sway of indignation, turned his mind only to battle. And your son Duryodhana then spoke to Karna: 'Behold, how with Krishna as ally, the Pandava, the Diademed one — while you were exerting yourself, and while Drona, great of soul, was exerting himself — before the eyes of the watching chief warriors, Saindhava has been struck down. Behold, Radheya, how kings, foremost on earth in battle, have been slain by the Partha alone, as by a lion the lesser beasts.'

Duryodhana marvels: with the greatest defenders all present, Jayadratha has fallen, while Arjuna alone struck down the foremost kings, as a lion strikes down the lesser beasts. It is telling that this disproportion between the outcome and the number of defenders does not lead him to suspect his own wrongdoing, but only to search for someone to blame. The verse teaches that when a cause is unjust, even a host of defenders is powerless; but the wrongdoer sees in this not a verdict on himself, but a mystery or a betrayal, unable to recognize the root of the matter in his own cause.
