मम व्यायच्छमानस्य समरे शत्रुसूदन ॥
अल्पावशेषं सैन्यं मे कृतं शक्रात्मजेन ह ॥
कथं ह्य् अनिच्छमानस्य द्रोणस्य युधि फल्गुनः ॥
भिन्द्यात् सुदुर्भिदं व्यूहं यतमानो ऽपि संयुगे ॥
प्रियो हि फल्गुनो नित्यम् आचार्यस्य महात्मनः ॥
ततो ऽस्य दत्तवान् द्वारं नयुद्धेनारिमर्दन ॥
अभयं सैन्धवस्याजौ दत्त्वा द्रोणः परंतपः ॥
प्रादात् किरीटिने द्वारं पश्य निर्गुणतां मम ॥

kathaṃ hy anicchamānasya droṇasya yudhi phalgunaḥ ||

priyo hi phalguno nityam ācāryasya mahātmanaḥ ||
tato 'sya dattavān dvāraṃ nayuddhenārimardana ||
abhayaṃ saindhavasyājau dattvā droṇaḥ paraṃtapaḥ ||
prādāt kirīṭine dvāraṃ paśya nirguṇatāṃ mama ||
'With me striving in battle, O slayer of enemies, the son of Shakra [Arjuna] has reduced my army to a small remnant. For how, when Drona was unwilling, could Phalguna in battle have broken through the hard-to-breach array, however he might have striven in the encounter? For Phalguna is always dear to the teacher, great of soul; therefore he gave him a gateway, not by battle [barring him], O crusher of enemies. Having given safety to Saindhava in battle, Drona, scorcher of enemies, gave the Diademed one a gateway; behold my misfortune.'

Duryodhana accuses Drona of betrayal, as though he 'gave Arjuna a gateway' out of love for his pupil. It is telling that he cannot admit any other cause — that the array was breached by Arjuna's own valor: suspicion seeks treachery where there was only the enemy's superiority. The verse teaches that the wrongdoer, unwilling to acknowledge the strength of his opponent, slanders the faithful; and one who accuses of betrayal a teacher who gave everything to his cause reveals not discernment but a mind darkened by grievance.
