...with gaping mouths, heads, and necks, together with the companions of Hidimba, and the yatudhanas of Pulastya's line, and the tamasas of terrible valor, with heroes bearing varied weapons, with varied armor and ornaments, mighty, terribly roaring, their eyes rolling with fury — rakshasas frenzied in battle who had now joined the fight — seeing your son [Duryodhana] downcast, Drauni said: 'Stand firm, Duryodhana; you must not be troubled; together with these hero-brothers and kings of the valor of Indra, I shall slay your enemies; no defeat awaits you; I promise you this in truth — calm your army.'

Seeing Duryodhana downcast, Ashvatthaman fortifies him with a vow: 'calm the army, no defeat awaits you.' It is significant that the teacher tends to the spirit of the leader, not only to the fighting: encouragement, too, is a form of valor. The verse teaches that a word of support in a moment of confusion carries as much weight as a blow; and one who can instill firmness in a disheartened heart serves the cause no less than one who strikes down the enemy.
