द्रौणेस् तत् कर्म दृष्ट्वा तु सर्वभूतान्य् अपूजयन् ॥
यद् अवप्लुत्य जग्राह घोरां शंकरनिर्मिताम् ॥
धृष्टद्युम्नरथं गत्वा भैमसेनिस् ततो नृप ॥
मुमोच निशितान् बाणान् पुनर् द्रौणेर् महोरसि ॥
धृष्टद्युम्नो ऽप्य् असंभ्रान्तो मुमोचाशीविषोपमान् ॥
सुवर्णपुङ्खान् विशिखान् द्रोणपुत्रस्य वक्षसि ॥
ततो मुमोच नाराचान् द्रौणिस् ताभ्यां सहस्रशः ॥
ताव् अप्य् अग्निशिखाप्रख्यैर् जघ्नतुस् तस्य मार्गणान् ॥
अतितीव्रम् अभूद् युद्धं तयोः पुरुषसिंहयोः ॥
योधानां प्रीतिजननं द्रौणेश् च भरतर्षभ ॥
drauṇes tat karma dṛṣṭvā tu sarvabhūtāny apūjayan ||
yad avaplutya jagrāha ghorāṃ śaṃkaranirmitām ||
dhṛṣṭadyumnarathaṃ gatvā bhaimasenis tato nṛpa ||
mumoca niśitān bāṇān punar drauṇer mahorasi ||
dhṛṣṭadyumno 'py asaṃbhrānto mumocāśīviṣopamān ||
suvarṇapuṅkhān viśikhān droṇaputrasya vakṣasi ||
tato mumoca nārācān drauṇis tābhyāṃ sahasraśaḥ ||
tāv apy agniśikhāprakhyair jaghnatus tasya mārgaṇān ||
atitīvram abhūd yuddhaṃ tayoḥ puruṣasiṃhayoḥ ||
yodhānāṃ prītijananaṃ drauṇeś ca bharatarṣabha ||
Having seen that deed of Drauni — that he had leapt down and caught the terrible thunderbolt fashioned by Shankara — all beings extolled him. Coming to Dhrishtadyumna's chariot, the son of Bhimasena [Ghatotkacha] then, O king, loosed sharp arrows once more at Drauni's broad chest. And Dhrishtadyumna, unperturbed, loosed golden-fletched arrows like vipers at the chest of Drona's son. Then Drauni loosed narachas by the thousand at those two; and those two, with arrows like tongues of flame, struck down his shafts.

Even the divine onlookers ("all beings") honor Ashvatthaman's feat: valor acknowledged by the whole of creation. It is telling that two now stand against him — Ghatotkacha and Dhrishtadyumna, his future slayer. The verse teaches that true greatness draws homage from creation itself; but greatness in battle is only a moment — and the one whom all beings now honor is already surrounded by those at whose hands his own line will end.
