संजय उवाच
दृष्ट्वा घटोत्कचं राजन् सूतपुत्ररथं प्रति ॥
प्रयान्तं त्वरर्या युक्तं जिघांसुं कर्णम् आहवे ॥
अब्रवीत् तव पुत्रस् तु दुःशासनम् इदं वचः ॥
एतद् रक्षो रणे तूर्णं दृष्ट्वा कर्णस्य विक्रमम् ॥
अभियाति द्रुतं कर्णं तद् वारय महारथम् ॥
वृतः सैन्येन महता याहि यत्र महाबलः ॥
कर्णो वैकर्तनो युद्धे राक्षसेन युयुत्सति ॥
रक्ष कर्णं रणे यत्तो वृतः सैन्येन मानद ॥
saṃjaya uvāca
dṛṣṭvā ghaṭotkacaṃ rājan sūtaputrarathaṃ prati ||
prayāntaṃ tvararyā yuktaṃ jighāṃsuṃ karṇam āhave ||
abravīt tava putras tu duḥśāsanam idaṃ vacaḥ ||
etad rakṣo raṇe tūrṇaṃ dṛṣṭvā karṇasya vikramam ||
abhiyāti drutaṃ karṇaṃ tad vāraya mahāratham ||
vṛtaḥ sainyena mahatā yāhi yatra mahābalaḥ ||
karṇo vaikartano yuddhe rākṣasena yuyutsati ||
rakṣa karṇaṃ raṇe yatto vṛtaḥ sainyena mānada ||
Having seen Ghatotkacha, O king, rushing swiftly toward the chariot of the son of the suta, longing to slay Karna in battle, your son spoke this word to Duhshasana: "Here the rakshasa, swiftly, seeing Karna's valor, rushes headlong at Karna; hold back that great warrior. Surrounded by a great army, go there where the mighty [Karna] is. Karna Vaikartana wishes to fight the rakshasa in battle; protect Karna in battle, standing ready, surrounded by the army, O bestower of honor."

Duryodhana hastens to shield Karna with a guard, for on him rests the camp's hope. It is telling that even the fearsome Karna must be protected -- no one is self-sufficient. The verse teaches that even the strongest needs the support of companions; and concern for the safety of the one on whom the cause rests is not a diminishment of him, but a sober recognition that in the shared battle everyone, however mighty, is vulnerable and needs a faithful guard.
