स राक्षसेन्द्रं कौन्तेयः शरवर्षैर् अवाकिरत् ॥
तान् अप्य् अस्याकरोन् मोघान् राक्षसो निशितैः शरैः ॥
ते चापि राक्षसाः सर्वे सैनिका भीमरूपिणः ॥
शासनाद् राक्षसेन्द्रस्य निजघ्नू रथकुञ्जरान् ॥
पाञ्चालाः सृञ्जयाश् चैव वाजिनः परमद्विपाः ॥
न शान्तिं लेभिरे तत्र रक्षसैर् भृशपीडिताः ॥
तं तु दृष्ट्वा महाघोरं वर्तमानं महाहवे ॥
अब्रवीत् पुरुषश्रेष्ठो धनंजयम् इदं वचः ॥
sa rākṣasendraṃ kaunteyaḥ śaravarṣair avākirat ||
tān apy asyākaron moghān rākṣaso niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ||
te cāpi rākṣasāḥ sarve sainikā bhīmarūpiṇaḥ ||
śāsanād rākṣasendrasya nijaghnū rathakuñjarān ||
pāñcālāḥ sṛñjayāś caiva vājinaḥ paramadvipāḥ ||
na śāntiṃ lebhire tatra rakṣasair bhṛśapīḍitāḥ ||
taṃ tu dṛṣṭvā mahāghoraṃ vartamānaṃ mahāhave ||
abravīt puruṣaśreṣṭho dhanaṃjayam idaṃ vacaḥ ||
[Alayudha] struck it with the mace — that mace flew back to Bhima. He, the son of Kunti, overwhelmed the lord of rakshasas with showers of arrows; and the rakshasa rendered those too vain with his sharp arrows. And all those rakshasas, soldiers fearsome in form, by the command of the lord of rakshasas struck down chariots and elephants. The Panchalas and Srinjayas, horses, the finest elephants, found no peace there, sorely afflicted by the rakshasas. And seeing that most terrible one raging in the great battle...

Maces clash and fly apart in vain, arrows cancel one another: the strength on both sides is equal, and the fight moves toward no resolution. It is telling that all around, Panchalas and Srinjayas perish — while the leaders fight to a draw, the rank and file suffer. The verse teaches that a prolonged duel of equals costs an army dearly: while the dispute of the strongest is being settled, a multitude of the weaker die; and an undecided duel of chiefs is paid for in the blood of those who await its outcome.
