अर्जुन उवाच
उद्यम्यात्मानम् उग्राय कर्मणे धैर्यम् आस्थिताः ॥
धमन्ति कौरवाः शङ्खान् यस्य वीर्यम् उपाश्रिताः ॥
यत्र ते संशयो राजन् न्यस्तशस्त्रे गुरौ हते ॥
धार्तराष्ट्रान् अवस्थाप्य क एष नदतीति ह ॥
ह्रीमन्तं तं महाबाहुं मत्तद्विरदगामिनम् ॥
व्याख्यास्याम्य् उग्रकर्माणं कुरूणाम् अभयंकरम् ॥

udyamyātmānam ugrāya karmaṇe dhairyam āsthitāḥ ||
dhamanti kauravāḥ śaṅkhān yasya vīryam upāśritāḥ ||
yatra te saṃśayo rājan nyastaśastre gurau hate ||
dhārtarāṣṭrān avasthāpya ka eṣa nadatīti ha ||
hrīmantaṃ taṃ mahābāhuṃ mattadviradagāminam ||
vyākhyāsyāmy ugrakarmāṇaṃ kurūṇām abhayaṃkaram ||
[Arjuna said:] "Having roused himself to a fierce deed, standing firm in resolve, the Kauravas blow their conches, relying on whose valor? What is your doubt, O king — when the teacher, who had laid down his weapons, was slain — as to who this is that, having steadied the Dhartarashtras, roars? That modest, mighty-armed one, advancing like a maddened elephant, I will describe to you — fierce in his deeds, granting the Kurus freedom from fear."

Arjuna undertakes to name the one on whose might the revived army leans. It is significant that his very first word about this terrible warrior is "modest" — hrīmān: even of an enemy Arjuna speaks truthfully, noting his noble sense of shame. The verse teaches that justice gives its due even to an adversary; and one able to see merit in an enemy keeps his judgment clear where others are blinded by hostility.
