saṃrabdhā hi sthirībhūtā droṇaputreṇa kauravāḥ ||
udagrāḥ pāṇḍupāñcālā droṇasya nidhanena ca ||
teṣāṃ paramahṛṣṭānāṃ jayam ātmani paśyatām ||
saṃrabdhānāṃ mahāvegaḥ prādurāsīd raṇājire ||
Then the clash of the armies of Kuru and Pandava, O king, again grew fierce, like that of two full oceans. The Kauravas, enraged, made steadfast by the son of Drona; the Pandavas and Panchalas heartened by the death of Drona. Among them, greatly rejoicing, seeing victory in themselves, enraged, a great surge arose on the field of battle.

Both hosts are heartened — one by Ashvatthaman, the other by Drona's death: the same event feeds opposite hopes. It is telling that each side 'sees victory in itself' — self-assurance veils the coming disaster. The verse teaches that mutual confidence in victory before a battle is deceptive, for triumph is not granted to all; and one who senses victory as his own beforehand is often the more deceived — for the outcome is decided not by ardor but by the hidden will of fate.
