Here is the ladder that was spoken of: aloud — whispered — silently, and each rung a thousand times higher than the one before. This rule stands everywhere in books on yoga and codes of conduct; it is in Manu (2.85) in almost the same words. Its ground we have already named and shall repeat, so as not to dispute it needlessly: quiet repetition is more concentrated.
Now let us say why the Vaishnava side overturns this rule, and let us say it not in general terms, but by pointing to the place where it is done directly. In the Chaitanya-charitamrita there is a conversation devoted expressly to this. Haridasa Thakura is asked why he repeats aloud, and he answers, citing an examination of the scriptures: one who repeats silently liberates himself, while one who repeats aloud liberates himself and everyone who hears; and hence loud chanting surpasses a hundredfold the quiet kind (Antya 3.68–71).
There too is an explanation that carries this to its limit. The hearers are not people alone: birds, animals, insects, and trees, hearing the Name, receive benefit, even though unable to repeat it themselves; and Haridasa says they "cannot pronounce it, but hearing it, are saved." Here lies the difference between the two understandings, and it is not a matter of volume.
By the yogic reckoning, repetition is an exercise, that is, work upon oneself; and everything that hinders concentration is a loss. By the Vaishnava reckoning, repetition is a message; and then a loss in concentration is more than made up for by the fact that someone else has heard. The difference, then, lies in whether one alone is to be saved. And the moment this question is posed, the ladder "the quieter the better" overturns itself, without any dispute over its grounds.
