The fifth khanda begins with a new question, and it is worth noting that the pupil asks samasatah, "in brief." This request is customary and courteous in such dialogues; but here it comes fittingly, for the preceding khanda was long and detailed beyond measure. Worth noting too is that the goal repeated is the same as at the very start of the book: jivan-mukto bhavami aham, "I shall become liberated while living" (1.3).
The repetition of the goal after sixty lines of description is, in my view, a mark of good construction. The pupil has not lost himself in the details and remembers why he asked. This capacity, it should be said, is rare both in reading and in life. Every detailed teaching has a tendency to draw one in: a person who began seeking liberation, a year later is absorbed in the arrangement of the passages and no longer remembers why he began.
The Vaishnava side holds a rule against this, already discussed: sambandha — abhidheya — prayojana, "relation, means, goal." Three questions one is told to keep constantly before oneself: to whom am I bound, by what do I act, for what purpose. This rule is arranged so that the means never stands alone: it is always squeezed between relation and goal. And the moment a person begins occupying himself with the means for its own sake, this very arrangement at once shows that he has strayed.
