The same signs are listed as before (6.14): sweat, trembling, rising. This repetition deserves noting as a trait of oral composition, discussed when reading the second khanda (2.2). In a book written for the ear, repetitions are deliberate.
It is worth saying too something about the word jita, "conquered," applied here to breath. The language of victory in books on yoga, as already noted when reading the third khanda (3.6), is a fundamental one: the senses are conquered, breath, the mind, sleep. Let us add here what was not said there.
The language of victory presumes an adversary; and the adversary turns out to be one's own body with its functions. That is, a person is divided in two: one part of him wars against the other. This division is unavoidable in matters of restraint at first, and it would be dishonest to deny it: anyone who has denied himself something knows this state.
But one cannot remain in it, and the Vaishnava side points to the way out, already discussed when reading the first khanda. War ends not by victory, but by a change of the object of desire: where something better has appeared, there is no one left to fight. Hence its books do not speak of the body as an adversary at all. It is called upadhi, "that which is superimposed," and mandira, "a temple"; and it is treated not as an enemy, but as another's property, entrusted for safekeeping.
