श्रीभगवानुवाच ।
लोकेऽस्मिन्द्विविधा निष्ठा पुरा प्रोक्ता मयानघ ।
ज्ञानयोगेन साङ्ख्यानां कर्मयोगेन योगिनाम् ॥

loke 'smin dvividhā niṣṭhā purā proktā mayā 'nagha |
jñānayogena sāṅkhyānāṁ karmayogena yoginām ||

पुराpurāfrom time immemorial, from the very beginning, in the past.
प्रोक्ताproktāwere declared, were expounded.
मयाmayāby Me.
अनघanaghaO sinless one!
ज्ञानयोगेनjñāna-yogenathrough jñāna-yoga (the path of philosophical knowledge).
साङ्ख्यानाम्sāṅkhyānāmfor the sāṅkhyas (those inclined to analysis).
कर्मयोगेनkarma-yogenathrough karma-yoga (the path of selfless action).
योगिनाम्yogināmfor the yogīs (those inclined to action).
Translation
The Blessed Lord said: “O sinless one, as I have already declared at the very beginning, there are two paths in this world. For those inclined to philosophical inquiry, there is the path of jñāna-yoga; for those inclined to action, there is the path of karma-yoga.”
