कर्मणः सुकृतस्याहुः सात्त्विकं निर्मलं फलम् ।
रजसस्तु फलं दुःखमज्ञानं तमसः फलम् ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
karmaṇaḥ sukṛtasyāhuḥ sāttvikaṁ nirmalaṁ phalam |
rajasas tu phalaṁ duḥkham ajñānaṁ tamasaḥ phalam ||

निर्मलम् फलम्nirmalam phalamand pure (nirmalam) fruit (phalam).
रजसः तुrajasaḥ tubut of rajas.
फलम् दुःखम्phalam duḥkhamthe fruit is suffering.
अज्ञानम्ajñānamignorance.
तमसः फलम्tamasaḥ phalamthe fruit of tamas.
Translation
“It is said that the fruit of pious action in the mode of goodness is purity. The fruit of action in the mode of passion is suffering, and the fruit of action in the mode of ignorance is yet more ignorance.”
