Translation

"She, having pondered a moment, filled with grief and indignation, looking at her husband, enraged, spoke a word: 'O great king, though you know the truth, why do you speak so shamelessly, 'I do not know,' like some commoner? Your own heart knows here both truth and falsehood; O noble one, you are your own witness — do not, then, demean yourself. He who, being one, presents himself as another — what sin has that thief not committed, who robs even himself? You think, "I am alone here," but you do not know the ancient sage who dwells in the heart, who knows every evil deed; before him you commit wrong. Some, having done evil, think, "no one sees me"; but the gods and one's own inner witness know it. The Sun and Moon, wind and fire, sky, earth, waters, the heart and Yama, day and night, both twilights, and Dharma — all know the conduct of man. Yama, son of Vivasvan, does not exact punishment for wrongdoing from him with whose heart the witness of deeds, the kshetrajna (the knower of the field), abiding within, is pleased. But from that evil-souled man with whom he is displeased, from that wrongdoer Yama exacts the punishment for wrongdoing. He who, having despised himself by himself, presents himself as another, for whom his own soul is no longer even a witness — for him the gods too withhold their favor. Do not despise me, who have come of my own accord, devoted to my husband; me, worthy of honor, your own wife who has come to you herself, you do not honor. Why do you look upon me in this assembly as upon a commoner? For it is not into emptiness that I cry out — why do you not hear me?''"
