पाण्डुर् उवाच
ममाप्य् एष सदा माद्रि हृद्य् अर्थः परिवर्तते ॥
न तु त्वां प्रसहे वक्तुम् इष्टानिष्टविवक्षया ॥
तव त्व् इदं मतं ज्ञात्वा प्रयतिष्याम्य् अतः परम् ॥
मन्ये ध्रुवं मयोक्ता सा वचो मे प्रतिपत्स्यते ॥
pāṇḍur uvāca
mamāpy eṣa sadā mādri hṛdy arthaḥ parivartate ||
na tu tvāṃ prasahe vaktum iṣṭāniṣṭavivakṣayā ||
tava tv idaṃ mataṃ jñātvā prayatiṣyāmy ataḥ param ||
manye dhruvaṃ mayoktā sā vaco me pratipatsyate ||
Pandu said: "This thought too, O Madri, has always turned in my heart, but I did not dare speak it to you, not knowing whether it would be welcome to you or not. But now, knowing your wish, I will endeavor from this time on; I think that, entreated by me, she will surely accept my word."

Here Pandu shows a husband's sensitivity and tact. It is telling that he had long wished for the same thing but kept silent, "not knowing" whether it was welcome to Madri: even of a good thing he will not speak without first being assured of his wife's consent. Herein lies a model of mutual respect between spouses: the husband does not impose his will but waits for his wife's willing consent. Thus the scripture reveals the harmony in Pandu's household -- where husband and wives alike act in love and mutual regard, without compulsion; and so even a delicate matter is settled without discord.
