Hidimba said: "The enraged rakshasa, rolling his huge eyes at that sister of his, O best of the Kurus, said this to her: 'Who, evil-minded, works this hindrance to me, wishing to eat? Do you not fear, Hidimba, my wrath, gone mad? Shame on you, wanton one, desiring a man, acting against my will, disgracing all the former lords of the rakshasas! For the sake of these to whom you have gone for refuge, you have done me a very great wrong; these, all of them, I shall now kill together with you.'"

Here evil turns against its own blood -- the man-eater threatens to kill his own sister. It is telling how monstrous this unrighteousness is: the brother, unable to bear that his sister has turned to love and mercy, is ready to kill her. In this is the self-destructiveness of evil: the demonic nature, knowing no love, destroys even its own when they reach toward good. Telling is the contrast with Bhima's recent word on the worth of righteous kin (ch. 138): here is shown the horror of an unrighteous kinsman, for whom even blood ties are nothing before his rage. So the text shows that bonds of blood without dharma are fragile: where there is no love and no law, a brother raises his hand against his sister; and this very monstrousness prepares the man-eater's righteous doom.
