एवम् उक्त्वा हिडिम्बां स हिडिम्बो लोहितेक्षणः ॥
वधायाभिपपातैनां दन्तैर् दन्तान् उपस्पृशन् ॥
तम् आपतन्तं संप्रेक्ष्य भीमः प्रहरतां वरः ॥
भर्त्सयाम् आस तेजस्वी तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति चाब्रवीत् ॥

Translation
"Having said this to Hidimba, that red-eyed Hidimba, grinding his teeth, rushed upon her to kill her; but seeing him rushing on, Bhima, best of fighters, fiery, checked him, saying: 'Stop, stop!'"

Here Bhima rises to defend the one who but lately belonged to the enemy's camp. Telling is his chivalry: seeing the rakshasa raise his hand against a woman [rakshasi though she be], Bhima at once shields her with the cry 'stop!' Here is the high dharma of protection: the righteous shelters the defenseless and the weaker without regard to their kind or their past; one who has turned to good must be protected. Telling too is that Bhima defends her who came to love him and renounced evil for his sake: nobility answers devotion with protection. So the text shows that the valor of the righteous is a shield for all who seek refuge in it; and, having shielded Hidimba, Bhima prepares the reckoning of the man-eater, in which the strength of dharma will crush the strength of evil.
