The narrator calls Shakuni "harboring an old enmity, evil-minded": behind the mask of a game lies a long-standing hatred. It is telling that the seeming amusement is an instrument of enmity: what is called "a friendly game" is, in the player's heart, a settling of scores. The verse teaches that not every smile is friendly, and not every game innocent: revenge can be carried out under the guise of pastime. And the loss of the gandharva horses, a gift of a celestial being to Arjuna, shows that even what was granted from above is taken away — deceit does not spare even sacred gifts. Thus the true face of the "friend" is revealed: enmity wearing the mask of a game strips away even what heaven itself had bestowed.
