एवं विलपतीं कुन्तीम् अभिसान्त्व्य प्रणम्य च ॥

Thus having comforted the lamenting Kunti and bowed to her, the Pandavas, their joy extinguished, set out for the forest. And Vidura and the others, having consoled the afflicted Kunti with reasons, slowly led her into the house of Kshattri, themselves even more afflicted. And King Dhritarashtra, his mind troubled by grief, sent word to Kshattri: "Let him come quickly." Then Vidura went to Dhritarashtra's dwelling; and the agitated Dhritarashtra, lord of men, began to question him.

The Pandavas depart with "joy extinguished", yet not before comforting and bowing to their mother: even in extreme sorrow they serve others before themselves. Vidura, who shelters Kunti, grieves "even more" -- the righteous feel another's misfortune more keenly than their own. Telling is Dhritarashtra's anxiety in the very moment the disaster has come to pass: having allowed the calamity, he now paces in agitation and summons the one whose counsel he had not heeded before -- a belated fear awakens a belated thirst for wise words. The verse teaches that the noble comfort their neighbor even in their own grief; that a righteous man's compassion exceeds his own sorrow; and that the weak, having permitted evil, are afterward tormented by fear -- and then seek the wisdom they once rejected while there was still time to prevent the disaster.
