Having seen the Pandavas from afar, clad in black deerskins, the rakshasa closed off the entrance to the forest, like Mount Mainaka. Lotus-eyed Krishna-Draupadi, drawing near him and seeing what she had never seen before, closed her eyes in terror. Her hair, once loosened by the hand of Duhshasana, was disheveled; amid the five Pandavas she seemed like a river troubled between five mountains. As she began to faint, the five Pandavas held her up, as the senses hold fast to pleasure bound to its objects. Then Dhaumya, applying various mantras that destroy rakshasas, dispelled this dreadful rakshasa illusion before the eyes of the sons of Pandu. His illusion destroyed, the base and mighty Kirmira, who could take on any form he wished, now appeared as the very image of death, his eyes dilated with rage.

Draupadi here again carries the memory of the assembly hall: her hair, loosened by Duhshasana, links the forest's terror to that earlier humiliation. But now beside her stand not a powerless assembly but her husbands, a priest, and a mantra that dispels illusion. Protection begins with the restoration of spiritual sight.
