मार्कण्डेय उवाच
मारीचस् त्व् अथ संभ्रान्तो दृष्ट्वा रावणम् आगतम् ॥
पूजयाम् आस सत्कारैः फलमूलादिभिस् तथा ॥
विश्रान्तं चैनम् आसीनम् अन्वासीनः स राक्षसः ॥
उवाच प्रश्रितं वाक्यं वाक्यज्ञो वाक्यकोविदम् ॥
न ते प्रकृतिमान् वर्णः कच्चित् क्षेमं पुरे तव ॥
कच्चित् प्रकृतयः सर्वा भजन्ते त्वां यथा पुरा ॥
किम् इहागमने चापि कार्यं ते राक्षसेश्वर ॥
कृतम् इत्य् एव तद् विद्धि यद्य् अपि स्यात् सुदुष्करम् ॥

uvāca praśritaṃ vākyaṃ vākyajño vākyakovidam ||
na te prakṛtimān varṇaḥ kaccit kṣemaṃ pure tava ||
kaccit prakṛtayaḥ sarvā bhajante tvāṃ yathā purā ||
kim ihāgamane cāpi kāryaṃ te rākṣaseśvara ||
kṛtam ity eva tad viddhi yady api syāt suduṣkaram ||
Seeing Ravana arrive, Marica honored him with fruits, roots, and other gifts. When Ravana had rested, Marica sat down beside him and humbly asked whether all was well in his city and among his subjects, saying that he would carry out Ravana's task, however difficult it might prove.
