"I do not blame her for that. Homage to dharma, the establisher! Dharma, O great Krishna, forever upholds all beings. If dharma indeed exists, O descendant of Vrishni, then truth will prevail; and you yourself, O Krishna, will bring all of this to pass. It is not widowhood, Madhava, nor the loss of wealth, nor enmity that grieves me so much as separation from my sons. When I do not see Dhananjaya, the wielder of the Gandiva, the best of all who bear weapons, what peace can there be for my heart? This is now the fourteenth year in which I have not seen Yudhishthira, nor Dhananjaya, O Govinda, nor the twins, nor Vrikodara."

This passage (5.88.66-70) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace unfolds against the backdrop of an already inevitable war. Key themes: Krishna, dharma. Dharma reveals itself here through speech, the choice of embassy, fidelity to promises, and the responsibility kings bear for the consequences of their decisions.
