इयेष पाण्डवस् तस्य बाणैश् छेत्तुं शरासनम् ॥
तस्य चिन्तयतस् त्व् एवं फल्गुनस्य महात्मनः ॥
द्रोणः शरैर् असंभ्रान्तो ज्यां चिच्छेदाशु वीर्यवान् ॥
विव्याध च हयान् अस्य ध्वजं सारथिम् एव च ॥
अर्जुनं च शरैर् वीरं स्मयमानो ऽभ्यवाकिरत् ॥
iyeṣa pāṇḍavas tasya bāṇaiś chettuṃ śarāsanam ||
tasya cintayatas tv evaṃ phalgunasya mahātmanaḥ ||
droṇaḥ śarair asaṃbhrānto jyāṃ cicchedāśu vīryavān ||
vivyādha ca hayān asya dhvajaṃ sārathim eva ca ||
arjunaṃ ca śarair vīraṃ smayamāno 'bhyavākirat ||
The Pandava resolved to cut his bow with arrows; but while he, Phalguna the great-souled, was thus intent, Drona pierced his horses, banner, and charioteer, and showered Arjuna the hero with arrows, smiling.

Drona's mastery matches his disciple's: the instant Arjuna intends to cut his bow, the teacher forestalls him, striking down his horses, banner, and charioteer. And again 'smayamānaḥ,' smiling — in battle with his disciple there is no malice, only a teacher's pride. It is telling that Drona seems to delight in the strength he himself cultivated. The verse teaches that a true teacher loves his disciple even in confrontation: testing him to the limit, he smiles at his valor, for in it is the fruit of his own labor; and a duel between guru and pupil is a meeting of two perfections, not of two enemies.
