तद् दृष्ट्वा तादृशं युद्धं द्रोणपाण्डवयोस् तदा ॥
वासुदेवो महाबुद्धिः कार्यवत्ताम् अचिन्तयत् ॥
ततो ऽब्रवीद् वासुदेवो धनंजयम् इदं वचः ॥
पार्थ पार्थ महाबाहो न नः कालात्ययो भवेत् ॥
द्रोणम् उत्सृज्य गच्छामः कृत्यम् एतन् महत्तरम् ॥
पार्थश् चाप्य् अब्रवीत् कृष्णं यथेष्टम् इति केशव ॥
tad dṛṣṭvā tādṛśaṃ yuddhaṃ droṇapāṇḍavayos tadā ||
vāsudevo mahābuddhiḥ kāryavattām acintayat ||
tato 'bravīd vāsudevo dhanaṃjayam idaṃ vacaḥ ||
pārtha pārtha mahābāho na naḥ kālātyayo bhavet ||
droṇam utsṛjya gacchāmaḥ kṛtyam etan mahattaram ||
pārthaś cāpy abravīt kṛṣṇaṃ yatheṣṭam iti keśava ||
Having seen that battle between Droṇa and the Pāṇḍava, Vāsudeva of great intellect thought about the importance of the task. Then Vāsudeva said this word to Dhanañjaya: "Pārtha, Pārtha, O mighty-armed one, let us not lose time; let us leave Droṇa and go on — this task is more important." And Pārtha said to Kṛṣṇa: "As you wish, O Keśava."

Kṛṣṇa, "mahābuddhiḥ," the wise one, turns Arjuna back to what matters most: "kṛtyam etat mahattaram," "this task is more important" — the vow, not the duel with the teacher. The Lord guards him from being drawn aside into a lesser matter. And Arjuna is obedient: "yatheṣṭam iti keśava," "as you wish." It is telling that the devotee submits his own will to the will of God without argument. The verse teaches that wisdom distinguishes the essential from the worthy-but-secondary: the duel with the guru is honorable, but the goal is to save the honor of the vow; and a devotee who has surrendered himself to the Lord leaves even a glorious battle at God's word, for obedience to Him stands above one's own impulse.
