सो ऽभवद् गिरिर् अत्युच्चः शिखरैस् तरुसंकटैः ॥
शूलप्रासासिमुसलजलप्रस्रवणो महान् ॥
तम् अञ्जनचयप्रख्यं द्रौणिर् दृष्ट्वा महीधरम् ॥
प्रपतद्भिश् च बहुभिः शस्त्रसंघैर् न चुक्षुभे ॥
ततः स्मयन्न् इव द्रौणिर् वज्रम् अस्त्रम् उदीरयत् ॥
स तेनास्त्रेण शैलेन्द्रः क्षिप्तः क्षिप्रम् अनश्यत ॥
ततः स तोयदो भूत्वा नीलः सेन्द्रायुधो दिवि ॥
अश्मवृष्टिभिर् अत्युग्रो द्रौणिम् आच्छादयद् रणे ॥
so 'bhavad girir atyuccaḥ śikharais tarusaṃkaṭaiḥ ||
śūlaprāsāsimusalajalaprasravaṇo mahān ||
tam añjanacayaprakhyaṃ drauṇir dṛṣṭvā mahīdharam ||
prapatadbhiś ca bahubhiḥ śastrasaṃghair na cukṣubhe ||
tataḥ smayann iva drauṇir vajram astram udīrayat ||
sa tenāstreṇa śailendraḥ kṣiptaḥ kṣipram anaśyata ||
tataḥ sa toyado bhūtvā nīlaḥ sendrāyudho divi ||
aśmavṛṣṭibhir atyugro drauṇim ācchādayad raṇe ||
He became an immense mountain, its peaks dense with trees, vast, pouring forth tridents, prasas, swords, clubs, and water. Seeing this mountain, resembling a heap of antimony, Drauni was not troubled even by the many falling masses of weapons. Then, as if smiling, Drauni invoked the vajra weapon; struck by that astra, the lord of mountains vanished at once. Then, having become a dark blue cloud crowned with a rainbow in the sky, terrible with rains of stone, he showered Drauni in battle.

Ghatotkacha changes shape — a mountain, a cloud crowned with a rainbow — but Ashvatthaman, 'smiling,' dispels each one with the vajra and the vayavya: knowledge overcomes every illusion. His composure before the monstrous is significant. The verse teaches that illusions, however terrible, are powerless before firm knowledge; and one who wields the highest weapons with a cool mind disperses every illusion, as the wind disperses a cloud.
