विधम्य राक्षसान् बाणैः साश्वसूतरथान् विभुः ॥
ददाह भगवान् वह्निर् भूतानीव युगक्षये ॥
स दग्ध्वाक्षौहिणीं बाणैर् नैरृतान् रुरुचे भृशम् ॥
पुरेव त्रिपुरं दग्ध्वा दिवि देवो महेश्वरः ॥
युगान्ते सर्वभूतानि दग्ध्वेव वसुर् उल्बणः ॥
रराज जयतां श्रेष्ठो द्रोणपुत्रस् तवाहितान् ॥
तेषु राजसहस्रेषु पाण्डवेयेषु भारत ॥
नैनं निरीक्षितुं कश् चिच् छक्नोति द्रौणिम् आहवे ॥
ऋते घटोत्कचाद् वीराद् राक्षसेन्द्रान् महाबलात् ॥
vidhamya rākṣasān bāṇaiḥ sāśvasūtarathān vibhuḥ ||
dadāha bhagavān vahnir bhūtānīva yugakṣaye ||
sa dagdhvākṣauhiṇīṃ bāṇair nairṛtān ruruce bhṛśam ||
pureva tripuraṃ dagdhvā divi devo maheśvaraḥ ||
yugānte sarvabhūtāni dagdhveva vasur ulbaṇaḥ ||
rarāja jayatāṃ śreṣṭho droṇaputras tavāhitān ||
teṣu rājasahasreṣu pāṇḍaveyeṣu bhārata ||
nainaṃ nirīkṣituṃ kaś cic chaknoti drauṇim āhave ||
ṛte ghaṭotkacād vīrād rākṣasendrān mahābalāt ||
Having scattered the rakshasas with his arrows, along with their horses, charioteers, and chariots, the mighty one burned them as the benign fire burns creatures at the destruction of the world. Having burned an entire akshauhini of rakshasas with his arrows, he blazed brightly, as of old the god Maheshvara blazed in the sky after burning Tripura. Like the fierce fire of Vasu burning all beings at the end of the world, the son of Drona, best among conquerors, shone as he destroyed your enemies. Among those thousands of kings, among the Pandavas, O Bharata, no one could look upon Drauni in battle.

On this night Ashvatthaman is like Shiva who burned Tripura, like the fire at the end of the world: his aristeia has reached a godlike limit. It is telling that not one among the thousands can even look at him — the blaze of his power is unbearable. The verse teaches that valor carried to its summit comes to resemble the very forces of destruction; but this likeness is both awesome and bitter — for it shows the greatest skill turned to the incineration of the living.
