एवम् उक्तो ययौ शीघ्रं पुत्रेण तव सौबलः ॥
पिप्रीषुस् ते सुतान् राजन् दिधक्षुश् चैव पाण्डवान् ॥
अथ प्रववृते युद्धं द्रौणिराक्षसयोर् मृधे ॥
विभावर्यां सुतुमुलं शक्रप्रह्रादयोर् इव ॥
ततो घटोत्कचो बाणैर् दशभिर् गौतमीसुतम् ॥
जघानोरसि संक्रुद्धो विषाग्निप्रतिमैर् दृढैः ॥
स तैर् अभ्याहतो गाढं शरैर् भीमसुतेरितैः ॥
चचाल रथमध्यस्थो वातोद्धूत इव द्रुमः ॥

piprīṣus te sutān rājan didhakṣuś caiva pāṇḍavān ||
atha pravavṛte yuddhaṃ drauṇirākṣasayor mṛdhe ||
vibhāvaryāṃ sutumulaṃ śakraprahrādayor iva ||
tato ghaṭotkaco bāṇair daśabhir gautamīsutam ||
jaghānorasi saṃkruddho viṣāgnipratimair dṛḍhaiḥ ||
sa tair abhyāhato gāḍhaṃ śarair bhīmasuteritaiḥ ||
cacāla rathamadhyastho vātoddhūta iva drumaḥ ||
Thus urged on by your son, Saubala [Shakuni] went forth in haste, wishing to please your sons, O king, and to burn up the Pandavas. Then the battle between Drauni and the rakshasa began, tumultuous in the night, like the battle of Shakra and Prahrada. Then Ghatotkacha, enraged, struck the son of Gautami [Ashvatthaman] in the chest with ten arrows, firm as poison and fire. He, deeply struck by those arrows loosed by the son of Bhima, reeled where he stood on his chariot, like a tree shaken by the wind.

Even the unshaken Ashvatthaman reels under Ghatotkacha's arrows, like a tree in the wind: even the mightiest can be made to sway. It is telling that their duel is likened to the clash of a god and an asura, Shakra and Prahrada — a struggle of superhuman scale. The verse teaches that no one is truly invulnerable; even one who has never yet flinched may be shaken — but true firmness lies in standing again after the blow.
