The list ends, and the last ten names are exactly the ten books with which the Vaishnava reading, too, concluded. Śāṭyāyanī (100), Hayagrīva (101), Dattātreya (102), Gāruḍa (103), Jābāli (104), Saubhāgya (105), Sarasvatī-rahasya (106), Bahvṛcā (107) — and Muktikā, which we are reading. Kalisantaraṇa stands among them, and we read it eleventh, for it is among those Baladeva cites.
That is, the list closes upon itself: the last name in the list is the name of the very book that contains this list. Worth pausing on this, for the construction is beautiful and not accidental. The book names itself inside its own list; that is, it counts itself not above the list, as its outside inventory, but within it — one of the hundred and eight, not their describer from without.
The Vaishnava side loves such constructions and finds in them confirmation of its own rule about the word: scripture is not a pointer to the subject, but a part of the subject; and it was said at the seventh verse that Rāma is «established in vedānta». Add what is worth saying here, having reached the end of the list. We began reading these books one by one, not knowing beforehand what was in them; and now their list stands before us, read entire.
It turned out to be not a collection of one teaching, but a collection of disputants: in it stands both «in me there is neither the living nor the Lord» and «by remembrance of my feet — and by nothing else»; and a charm against snakes, and a book on beads, and the rule of renunciation, and a hymn to the goddess. And the last name in it is the name of the book that gathered all this and did not reduce it to one.
