The verse repeats the thirty-second, and this repetition, in such a book, is not superfluous: the distinction between sa-rūpa and a-rūpa is what this whole part rests on. Let it be repeated briefly: in the living, what is destroyed is not thought but its bondage; the form remains, and the person walks, speaks, and acts. Add here one thing not said when reading the thirty-second verse, worth saying.
The word mano-nāśa, «destruction of mind», in this body of writing stands beside vāsanā-kṣaya, «exhaustion of habits», and tattva-jñāna, «attainment of truth»; and we examined them as three going together (2.10). Worth noting that of the three, only one is called destruction; and this, I think, is telling. Habit is exhausted, truth is attained, and the mind is destroyed.
That is, in the very language of this school the mind is set among the enemies, not the instruments. The Vaishnava side parts ways here, and this was spoken of at Muktikā (2.7), where it was said lālayec citta-bālakam, «let him nurse the child-mind». Let the conclusion from there be repeated, for it is, I think, the chief disagreement of this chapter: one does not war with a child.
And add: the very book that commands the mind's destruction, fourteen verses earlier commanded that it be nursed; and this discord again points to the fact that we have before us a compilation.
