Signs are named by which one knows the practice is working: lightness of the body, strength of digestion, and, in the next line, the manifestation of an inner resonance. Worth noting is that these signs are verifiable. Lightness and a good appetite are things a person cannot deceive himself about for long.
This trait does the book credit. A teaching that assigns a practice and gives no signs leaves a person unable to know whether he is progressing; and such a person usually begins to imagine successes. The Vaishnava side also assigns signs and stands firmly on them; but its signs are different, and it is worth citing them, for the difference is telling.
The Bhagavatam says: bhaktih paresha-anubhavo viraktir anyatra cha esha trika eka-kalah, "devotion, the experience of the Supreme, and detachment from everything else — these three come at once"; and it explains with a comparison: as with each mouthful eaten, satiety, pleasure, and the appeasing of hunger come all together (11.2.42). This comparison deserves examining, for it gives a measure. The sign named is a negative one: the pull toward everything else diminishes. And it is as easy to verify as lightness of body: a person himself knows whether he is still drawn to what drew him before.
