The khanda ends with the word kramat, "gradually," and it is worth pausing on. This word is rare in such books, and yet it is truer than all promises of the immediate. In this very book we have read "instantly," and "in six months," and "in a year"; here it is simply said — gradually.
It is worth saying why this is better. A promised term is verifiable and hence disappoints: it does not come to pass, and a person gives up. A promise of gradualness does not disappoint, for it promises nothing but motion.
The Vaishnava side holds to gradualness and states it in its famous list of nine rungs (Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu 1.4.15–16), already mentioned more than once. Let us add here what we have not yet said, and which is its distinguishing trait. These rungs do not cancel one another. One who has reached taste does not stop hearing; one who has reached attachment does not stop repeating. Everything done at the first rung is done at the last too — only differently.
This relation differs from the yogic ladder, where the lower is left behind: one sitting in samadhi is not occupied with posture. Hence its path is described not as an ascent up a ladder, but as a deepening into the same thing. A person does what he did on the first day — he hears and repeats; what changes is not the occupation, but himself.
