Laghu-bhāgavatāmṛta
Rūpa Gosvāmī's second major work, the companion to the Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu: that book treats rasa, this one tattva. The first chapter states the aim — to show that among all who are worshipped, Kṛṣṇa is the chief — and settles it not by argument but by scripture: the author declares outright that he rests on śabda-pramāṇa, citing the Vedānta-sūtra on the source of knowledge and on the unsteadiness of reasoning. The book falls in two. The Kṛṣṇāmṛta (five chapters) sorts the Lord's forms into classes — svayaṃ-rūpa, tad-ekātma-rūpa with its vilāsas and svāṃśas, āveśa, prakāśa — then treats the puruṣa- and guṇa-avatāras, the līlā-avatāras, the manvantara-avatāras and their abodes, and closes with its longest chapter, which establishes Kṛṣṇa's supreme position. The Bhaktāmṛta (one chapter) speaks of His devotees, and of the worship of them standing above the worship of Him alone. More than half the text consists of verses from the Bhāgavata, the purāṇas and the pañcarātra, quoted as evidence; they carry the book's own verse numbers and so read as its own verses. The reading unit is the verse, numbered by khaṇḍa, chapter and verse.
