ततः समाधाय स वेदपारगो; जुहाव मन्त्रैर् ज्वलितं हुताशनम् ॥
युधिष्ठिरं चाप्य् उपनीय मन्त्रविन्; नियोजयाम् आस सहैव कृष्णया ॥
प्रदक्षिणं तौ प्रगृहीतपाणी; समानयाम् आस स वेदपारगः ॥
ततो ऽभ्यनुज्ञाय तम् आजिशोभिनं; पुरोहितो राजगृहाद् विनिर्ययौ ॥
tataḥ samādhāya sa vedapārago; juhāva mantrair jvalitaṃ hutāśanam ||
yudhiṣṭhiraṃ cāpy upanīya mantravin; niyojayām āsa sahaiva kṛṣṇayā ||
pradakṣiṇaṃ tau pragṛhītapāṇī; samānayām āsa sa vedapāragaḥ ||
tato 'bhyanujñāya tam ājiśobhinaṃ; purohito rājagṛhād viniryayau ||
"Then that knower of the Vedas, having arranged the fire, poured offerings with mantras into the blazing flame; and, leading Yudhishthira forward, the knower of mantras joined him with Krishna. That knower of the Vedas led the two of them, hands joined together, around the fire with the right side turned toward it; then, having taken leave of him, splendid in battle, the priest departed from the king's house."

Here the marriage is sealed before the fire -- witness and sanctifier. It is telling that they circle the fire keeping the right side toward it, hands joined together: Agni becomes the witness of the union, and a vow taken before him is unbreakable. The sacred fire consecrates the marriage and makes it attested before the gods. Thus the verse shows the essence of the marriage sacrament; and the union of Yudhishthira with Draupadi is sealed by Agni.
