उलूप्य् उवाच
ऐरावतकुले जातः कौरव्यो नाम पन्नगः ॥
तस्यास्मि दुहिता पार्थ उलूपी नाम पन्नगी ॥
साहं त्वाम् अभिषेकार्थम् अवतीर्णं समुद्रगाम् ॥
दृष्टवत्य् एव कौन्तेय कन्दर्पेणास्मि मूर्च्छिता ॥
तां माम् अनङ्गमथितां त्वत्कृते कुरुनन्दन ॥
अनन्यां नन्दयस्वाद्य प्रदानेनात्मनो रहः ॥
ulūpy uvāca
airāvatakule jātaḥ kauravyo nāma pannagaḥ ||
tasyāsmi duhitā pārtha ulūpī nāma pannagī ||
sāhaṃ tvām abhiṣekārtham avatīrṇaṃ samudragām ||
dṛṣṭavaty eva kaunteya kandarpeṇāsmi mūrcchitā ||
tāṃ mām anaṅgamathitāṃ tvatkṛte kurunandana ||
ananyāṃ nandayasvādya pradānenātmano rahaḥ ||
Ulupi said: "In the family of Airavata was born a naga named Kauravya; I am his daughter, O Partha, a naga maiden named Ulupi. The moment I saw you descending into the Ganga, which flows to the sea, to bathe, I was overcome by the god of love; delight me now, who am consumed by the Bodiless One because of you, thinking of nothing else -- give yourself to me, in private."

Here the power of passion reveals itself even over the daughter of the nagas. It is telling that Ulupi openly confesses her longing: love, once it takes hold of the heart, seeks to pour itself out. How strong is kama, which robs one of peace! Thus the scripture reveals the sincerity of her plea; but the righteous Arjuna must answer without forsaking either truth or dharma.
