By the gift of life, O mighty-armed one, practice the highest dharma; and I have taken refuge in you this day, O best of men; the destitute, the helpless you always protect; I come to you for refuge and cry out, grieving; I beg you, desiring you; therefore grant me what is dear to me; you, by giving yourself, should make me fulfilled in desire.

Here the righteous may not reject one who has taken refuge in them. It is significant that Ulupi resorts to sharanagati [surrender under protection]: one who has accepted refuge cannot be turned away by the protector. Herein lies the sanctity of refuge -- to reject one who has come for shelter is a grave sin for the protector of the weak. Thus the scripture reveals the power of a plea for protection; and Arjuna, protector of the helpless, will incline to compassion.
