यदि वाप्य् अस्य धर्मस्य सूक्ष्मो ऽपि स्याद् व्यतिक्रमः ॥
स च ते धर्म एव स्याद् दात्त्वा प्राणान् ममार्जुन ॥
भक्तां भजस्व मां पार्थ सताम् एतन् मतं प्रभो ॥
न करिष्यसि चेद् एवं मृतां माम् उपधारय ॥

yadi vāpy asya dharmasya sūkṣmo 'pi syād vyatikramaḥ ||
sa ca te dharma eva syād dāttvā prāṇān mamārjuna ||

na kariṣyasi ced evaṃ mṛtāṃ mām upadhāraya ||

सः च ते धर्मः एव स्यात् दत्त्वा प्राणान् मम अर्जुनsaḥ ca te dharmaḥ eva syāt dattvā prāṇān mama arjunathat too would be dharma for you -- by granting me life, O Arjuna;
भक्तां भजस्व मां पार्थ सताम् एतत् मतं प्रभोbhaktāṃ bhajasva māṃ pārtha satām etat mataṃ prabholove me, devoted to you, O Partha; such is the opinion of the virtuous, O lord;
न करिष्यसि चेत् एवं मृतां माम् उपधारयna kariṣyasi cet evaṃ mṛtāṃ mām upadhārayabut if you do not act thus -- consider me dead;

Here the saving of life is proclaimed the highest dharma. It is telling that even a small departure becomes dharma so long as it saves a life -- for nonviolence and mercy stand above private vows. Love for a neighbor's life outweighs literal purity. Thus the scripture reveals the teaching of compassion's primacy; and Ulupi appeals to Arjuna's mercy.
