विद्ध्वेषूणां त्रिसप्तत्या पुनर् विव्याध सप्तभिः ॥
स गाढविद्धो व्यथितो रथोपस्थ उपाविशत् ॥
विसृजन् सशरं चापं मूर्छयाभिपरिप्लुतः ॥
तं विषण्णं रथे दृष्ट्वा तावका भरतर्षभ ॥
हार्दिक्यं पूजयाम् आसुर् वासांस्य् आदुधुवुश् च ह ॥

तावकाः भरतर्षभtāvakāḥ bharatarṣabhayour [men], O bull [among] the Bharatas; your [warriors], O bull of the Bharatas

हार्दिक्यम् पूजयाम् आसुःhārdikyam pūjayām āsuḥpraised the son of Hridika; extolled the son of Hridika

वासांसि आदुधुवुः च हvāsāṃsi ādudhuvuḥ ca haand waved [their] garments; and flourished [their] garments

Traducción

But Kritavarman, having pierced the impetuous son of Yajnasena, the great warrior, with seventy-three arrows, struck him again with seven more. He, deeply pierced and tormented, sank onto the platform of his chariot, letting fall his bow and arrow, overcome by a swoon. Seeing him thus despondent in the chariot, your men, O bull among the Bharatas, praised the son of Hridika and waved their garments.

Comentario

Even Shikhandin, the instrument of fate against Bhishma, is overpowered and sinks into unconsciousness: neither destiny nor valor grants unbroken triumph. It is fitting that even fate's chosen agent knows defeat in his hour. The verse teaches that mastery passes from hand to hand, and in battle itself there is no unshakable advantage: the one destined to slay the invincible may himself be laid low -- for fortune on the field is fickle, and today's victor tomorrow grows faint.
