दुर्योधनं च त्वरितो विव्याधाष्टभिर् आशुगैः ॥
प्रहसंश् चास्य चिच्छेद कार्मुकं रिपुभीषणम् ॥
नागं मणिमयं चैव शरैर् ध्वजम् अपातयत् ॥
हत्वा तु चतुरो वाहांश् चतुर्भिर् निशितैः शरैः ॥
सारथिं पातयाम् आस क्षुरप्रेण महायशाः ॥
एतस्मिन्न् अन्तरे चैव कुरुराजं महारथम् ॥
अवाकिरच् छरैर् हृष्टो बहुभिर् मर्मभेदिभिः ॥
duryodhanaṃ ca tvarito vivyādhāṣṭabhir āśugaiḥ ||
prahasaṃś cāsya ciccheda kārmukaṃ ripubhīṣaṇam ||
nāgaṃ maṇimayaṃ caiva śarair dhvajam apātayat ||
hatvā tu caturo vāhāṃś caturbhir niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ||
sārathiṃ pātayām āsa kṣurapreṇa mahāyaśāḥ ||
etasminn antare caiva kururājaṃ mahāratham ||
avākirac charair hṛṣṭo bahubhir marmabhedibhiḥ ||
And he swiftly pierced Duryodhana with eight swift arrows, and, laughing, cut his bow, the terror of enemies; and with arrows he brought down the banner bearing the jeweled elephant, slaying the four horses with four sharp arrows. In this same moment, rejoicing, he showered the king of the Kurus, the great warrior, with many arrows piercing the vital points.

Satyaki strips Duryodhana one by one of his bow, his banner, his horses — taking from the instigator the very supports of his strength. It is telling that the man who imagined himself near his goal is left disarmed. The verse teaches that the seeming triumph of the unjust is short-lived: he who prided himself on his gathered might loses, prop by prop, the very ground he stood on in the hour of reckoning, and pride, stripped of what upheld it, is exposed in its helplessness.
