तस्मिंस् तु विवरे राजन् नाराचान् गार्ध्रवाससः ॥
प्राहिणोत् सूतपुत्राय भीमसेनश् चतुर्दश ॥
ते तस्य कवचं भित्त्वा स्वर्णपुङ्खा महौजसः ॥
हेमचित्रा महाराज द्योतयन्तो दिशो दश ॥
अपिबन् सूतपुत्रस्य शोणितं रक्तभोजनाः ॥
क्रुद्धा इव मनुष्येन्द्र भुजगाः कालचोदिताः ॥
प्रसर्पमाणा मेदिन्यां ते व्यरोचन्त मार्गणाः ॥
अर्धप्रविष्टाः संरब्धा बिलानीव महोरगाः ॥
tasmiṃs tu vivare rājan nārācān gārdhravāsasaḥ ||
prāhiṇot sūtaputrāya bhīmasenaś caturdaśa ||
te tasya kavacaṃ bhittvā svarṇapuṅkhā mahaujasaḥ ||
hemacitrā mahārāja dyotayanto diśo daśa ||
apiban sūtaputrasya śoṇitaṃ raktabhojanāḥ ||
kruddhā iva manuṣyendra bhujagāḥ kālacoditāḥ ||
prasarpamāṇā medinyāṃ te vyarocanta mārgaṇāḥ ||
ardhapraviṣṭāḥ saṃrabdhā bilānīva mahoragāḥ ||
But into that same opening, O king, Bhimasena hurled fourteen iron arrows fletched with vulture feathers at the charioteer's son. They, piercing his armor, gold-shafted, mighty, adorned with gold, O great king, illuminating the ten directions, drank the charioteer's son's blood, feeding upon blood as if enraged, O lord of men — like serpents driven on by Time. Crawling over the earth, those arrows shone, half-buried, fierce, like huge serpents into their burrows.

Arrows that drink blood and half-bury themselves in the earth like serpents into their burrows, driven by Time — an image of death itself, finding its opening in another's grief. It is telling that the breach opened at the very instant Karna was mourning his brother: sorrow not released in time betrays a man to his enemy. The verse teaches that on the field of battle even a sacred feeling is dangerous if it delays; grief for the fallen is fitting, but war spares not even the grieving.
