स भीमस् त्रिभिर् आयस्तः सूतपुत्रं पतत्रिभिः ॥
सुपर्णवेगैर् विव्याध सारथिं चास्य सप्तभिः ॥
स विह्वलो महाराज कर्णो भीमबलार्दितः ॥
प्राद्रवज् जवनैर् अश्वै रणं हित्वा महायशाः ॥
भीमसेनस् तु विस्फार्य चापं हेमपरिष्कृतम् ॥
आहवे ऽतिरथो ऽतिष्ठज् ज्वलन्न् इव हुताशनः ॥
sa bhīmas tribhir āyastaḥ sūtaputraṃ patatribhiḥ ||
suparṇavegair vivyādha sārathiṃ cāsya saptabhiḥ ||
sa vihvalo mahārāja karṇo bhīmabalārditaḥ ||
prādravaj javanair aśvai raṇaṃ hitvā mahāyaśāḥ ||
bhīmasenas tu visphārya cāpaṃ hemapariṣkṛtam ||
āhave 'tiratho 'tiṣṭhaj jvalann iva hutāśanaḥ ||
Bhima, exerting himself, pierced the charioteer's son with three feathered arrows swift as Garuda, and his charioteer with seven. He, bewildered, O great king, Karna, tormented by Bhima's might, fled on his swift horses, abandoning the battle, the greatly renowned one. Bhimasena, however, stringing his gold-adorned bow, stood in the battle, the atiratha, like blazing fire.

The formidable Karna, worn down, quits the field — while Bhima stands like blazing fire: what a warrior stands upon is what makes him firm, and a righteous cause gives strength to stand when the wrongful one commands flight. It is telling that the flight is named alongside "mahāyaśāḥ," the greatly renowned: even fame does not hold a man to the field once his support has been cut away. The verse teaches that victory in battle belongs not to strength alone but to a firmness born of righteousness; whoever stands for truth stands even when the mightier retreats.
